Film number 3 is coming up as part of our “ThisCulture” film series, we’ve had some great films so far and it’s been amazing to be able to bring them to you on the big screen. Next is “Favela on Blast” on August 18th, it’s an amazing doco and one not to miss, we’ve got El Gato Negro on the decks for the night too so come down early.

“Favela on Blast is the directorial film debut from Grammy-nominated DJ and producer, Diplo, and his partner Leandro HBL. For 20 years, a subculture has emerged under society’s radar. Favela On Blast tells the stories of sex, love, poverty and pride for Rio’s marginalized people. They have their own language, style and heroes. It’s a music that’s… fast, heavy and violent like the city itself. This film is a flash of a few lives of charismatic people that relate to the funk music and a retelling of the subculture itself.”

The new project I’ve been working on got started last week with the first screening in the film series. Here’s the next one for you to come check out, I really wanted to bring this to New Zealand because it’s such an amazing project and has been a real inspiration for me. We’re very excited and proud to present the NZ Premier of the  “Timeless: The Composer/Arranger Series” at Khuja Lounge on July 21st with support from DJ Dan Paine.

Timeless: The Composer/Arranger Series is the name of a concert series that was created in homage to the composer/arrangers who have influenced hip-hop in the most literal and profound ways. Timeless was conceived by production house Mochilla in Los Angeles during February and March 2009 and included the performances of over 150 musicians in front of ecstatic sold out crowds. These three historic events were recorded and filmed in exacting detail with Mochilla’s unmistakable style.

The screening will be a 2hr long mix of scenes from all three films in the TIMELESS DVD concert series:

•SUITE FOR MA DUKES – a full orchestra tribute to the late great J Dilla w/ all benefits going to his mother, Maureen “Ma Dukes” Yancey. the concert was conducted by legendary LA radio DJ, Carlos Nino, and led by string maestro, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson – it also features appearances from Dwele, Bilal, Karriem Riggins, and Common among others.

•ARTHUR VEROCAI – legendary Brazilian songwriter/producer/performer. His 1972 self-titled debut was a forgotten treasure turned crate digger’s dream. It has since been sampled by the likes of 9TH WONDER, MF DOOM, JNEIRO JAREL & countless others. It was re-released in 2003 on Ubiquity Records to critical acclaim.

•MULATU ASTATKE – influential Ethiopian jazz musician/arranger. His 1972 LP, Mulatu Of Ethiopia, has been a longtime favorite among record collectors & jazz connoisseurs alike. He has a newfound current audience after his music was prominently featured in Jim Jarmusch’s 2005 film, BROKEN FLOWERS, starring Bill Murray – and has also been sampled by some of hip-hop’s finest, the most well-known of which being NAS & DAMIAN MARLEY’s “As We Enter.”

ThisCulture is a new film series I’m putting together with the help of my good friend Morgan Hammond from Crooked Crowns, it’s an idea we’ve had floating round for a while (I registered the domain about 2 years ago!) so it’s great to finally get it going. The concept is pretty simple, we wanted to screen some music/beat culture films in a great little venue over the winter months, we also wanted to focus on films which you might not be able to see in New Zealand because nobody else is screening them. Some films are meant to be screened in cinema’s but I think some films are better screened in an intimate environment where you can feel a little more connected with the rest of the audience.

It’s going to be a six month series and we’ve got the first 3 films confirmed plus quite a few more on the bubble. It’s real exciting to be working with Dublab and Mochilla on the “Secondhand Sureshots” and “Timeless” screenings, this will be the first time that “Timeless” has been screened in New Zealand so make sure you come check it out, July date will be confirmed in the next week.

We’re also working with a local crew called “Film the music” who make amazing short doco’s from live performances in New Zealand. We’ll be screening one of their doco’s at each event and working out a feature night with them to showcase their work and celebrate the local music scene.

So we held the screenings of Still Bill last week and I just thought I’d let you all know a little of the back story to getting it all in place. It’s really a big thanks to a company called FXNetworks in Wellington and specifically Jamie Baddeley who helped make the screenings happen.

3 days before the screening in Wellington we had issues with the digital file of the film and needed a new hi res version. Ascent Media who supplied the original file went in to the studio on the weekend to make a new file and after a number of phone calls I found FXNetworks who offered to download a 23GB file in approx 6hrs, for free. As most of you know regular web download speeds in NZ are painfully slow so we needed to go hi speed cable to grab this file. FXNetwork are big supporters of the film industry and grabbed the file from an ftp server and we got it to the cinema for testing the morning of the screening! It worked, it looked amazing, everybody enjoyed the film and I didn’t have to postpone the screening to a later date, phew!

It’s amazing just how many people helped make the screenings happen and I’d just like to thank everybody for their efforts. I couldn’t have done it without you all, respect.

We’ve been working towards this event for a few months now and it’s finally happening this Saturday and I’m really excited to finally get it on. Check out all the details over at the NZ Soul Alldayer website and don’t miss out cos it’s gonna be rockin from start to finish. Then I’m takin a break for a while on the gigs and gettin back in the studio for some more Bluevibe action. Nice.

So after putting on the Music Machines gig last month I’ve got my next event coming up in Feb 2010. I’ve always been a fan of the UK alldayer’s so I’ve decided, with the help of some friends, to put the first NZ Soul Alldayer together for Feb 2010. You can head over to the NZ Soul Alldayer website for all the details including the killer lineup of DJ’s we’ve got on board for the gig.

This is the first NZ Soul alldayer and we’re giving the DJ’s a chance to play their interpretation of “Soul” music be it Soul classics, UK Soul, Boogie, Modern Soul, Disco, Northern Soul etc. For me Soul music has influenced and continues to impact on so many genres of music that we decide to let the DJ’s dig deep in to their crates and have some fun. The day is not just about “60′s Soul” but will really celebrate the music of the last 50 years. I’ll keep you all updated with all the details of the event, I’m still pretty new to putting on these kind of gigs so am always learning new skills and ways to deal with the challenges this kind of gig throws up. It’s gonna be a really fun day with some amazing music so come along and celebrate with us, gotta love a Soul music party!

I’m also really excited to be putting on the NZ premier of the new Bill Withers movie “Still Bill” which we’ll be showing the Thursday before the alldayer at the Academy cinema in Auckland. I’m a huge Bill Withers fan and it’s cool to be able to put this together with the help of Roco films in the US. I’ll let you all know once the tickets go on sale as we only have 200 seats and I’m expecting it to sell out fast.

So the Music Machines event is all over for this year and I just wanted to do a final update on this blog to summarise what it was all about. You can check out all the video and photo’s from the event over at the Music Machines website.

Music Machines was the first event I’ve put together as part of setting up my new company/project Bluevibe Collective. This new project is gonna focus on events and promotion with a few other creative aspects to it, i’ve not fully defined it yet but i’ve already got some great plans for next year including the Soul Alldayer which is gonna be on in Feb next year.

When I started to put this thing together and got Kerry from The Proof on board to help, our key focus was to try and get all this kit and these music enthusiasts together and try to create a forum where everybody could make a connection. This event wasn’t just about the gear, it was about celebrating the music made with this kit and the artists and fans who get something out of electronic music whether it’s techno, hiphop or dubstep.

We all learned so much from putting this event on and it’s really exciting to figure out where we go from here with this event. Music Machines 2010 is on next year, no doubt about that, but we’re already starting to get suggestions on what we should do with the website and facebook page, the database of electronic music enthusiasts and that’s something we’ll get on to in the new year. If you’ve got any suggestions or want to be part of Music Machines then just drop me a line. I know I’ve thanked everybody involved already but i’ll do it again, cos it wouldn’t have happened without all the amazing people who came along to help, much respect for that.
